Jasper Johns, born in Augusta, Georgia in 1930 today counts as one of the major figures in American art of the 1950s and 1960s. Johns selected themes that had previously attracted little attention: flags (the famous American flag), targets, numbers, letters of the alphabet, maps.
"I was concerned with the invisibility those images had acquired, and the idea of knowing an image rather than just seeing it out of the corner of your eye."

The Fondation Beyeler has succeeded in bringing to Basel a number of exceptional works shown in the Jasper Johns retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is the first time that the fifty works selected, all of which belong to the artist, are being hung together.
