In 1983, Basquiat became a close friend of Andy Warhol, whom he greatly admired, and the following year brought a fruitful collaboration between the two. While Warhol, inspired by the younger artist, returned to his beginnings in painting around 1960, Basquiat began to immerse himself in the silkscreen technique introduced by Warhol. Basquiat abruptly ended the cooperation with Warhol in 1985, after a show of joint works was negatively received by the critics. Their friendship suffered from this fiasco as well. Still, Basquiat was deeply affected by Warhol’s death, on February 22, 1987.
