Light projection, Facade of the Fondation Beyeler, 2009,
Copyrights
Since 1996 Holzer has created light projections in public spaces around the world, at sites including
the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris and the facade of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
With these outdoor projections, the artist found a new way of entering the public domain while
returning to her artistic beginnings and lending a fresh and innovative form to her public displays.
The texts used in these projections at times are Holzer's own, and in other times are the work of others.
She has used work by the Polish Nobel Prize winner for literature, Wisława Szymborska, and by the American poet,
Henri Cole, among others. These writings are conveyed to viewers in a compellingly monumental, but lyrical form.
In addition, the texts enter a dialogue with the history and look of the public building, mountain, river,
or ocean on which they are projected.
