Oil on linen, 6 elements
Alongside the electronic sculptures and light projections, Holzer has been working with
the medium of painting since 2005, marking a crucial turning point in her work. In her MAP
series, Holzer confronts us with maps from a PowerPoint presentation by the U.S. military's
Central Command used in planning the invasion of Iraq. Holzer commissioned another artist,
Ben Snead, to execute the painted grounds in accordance with her instructions. The image, an
unadulterated U.S. government document, is then silkscreened onto the ground. The flat character
of the superimposed motifs of the MAP paintings recalls the layering of Andy Warhol's serigraphs,
and Holzer references Goya's black paintings as impacting her choice of palette.
