Fernand Léger
Hommage à la danse, 1925
Léger’s penchant for clear, striking form also led to works like this one, which reflects his enthusiasm for the dance and ballet. With a both joyful and precise elegance, concentric circles and rings are combined with an image of two dancing legs. As the inscription at the lower right reveals, Léger dedicated this painting to the Swedish dancer Jean Borlin, choreographer of the Ballets suédois, whose performances were acclaimed in Paris at the time.
