Prints: Anticipations of the Twentieth Century
In the Berlin period, subject matter influenced by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism was supplanted by emotionally charged themes, the anxieties, loneliness and suffering underlying civilization. These found their most poignant and personal expression in The Scream. Like many of Munch’s motifs, this one exists in several versions, including outstanding prints like that illustrated here.
