Lucian Freud, who lives a hermit’s life in the midst of London, has adhered to an expressive, figurative style throughout his career. His paintings gloss over nothing; they are explicit in an almost shocking way. Here man and dog, both apparently on the point of dozing off, are treated as equals, for as the title says, this is a Double Portrait.
