Since the middle of the 1970s, Gerhard Richter has been painting abstractions that recur to and appear to combine postwar Western European abstraction with American Abstract Expressionism. Nevertheless, these images possess an expressive power all their own. Thanks to a careful superimposition of paint layers of different colors, spread before drying across the canvas using a spatula or wooden slat to produce random veils and streaks, a fascinating and paradoxical impression of depth results, an abstract space in color.
