In
series like Mao and Hammer and Sickle, Warhol pursues his interest
in the relationship between the masses and the media. His silkscreen
prints are now characterised by a freer, more expressive pictorial
language. At the same time they acquire a monumental impact because
the pictorial format is blown up so much (up to eleven metres).
The early films by Warhol included in the exhibition (for example,
Empire, Kiss and Sleep) show how the two media continuously influenced
one another in his work.
