Firehouse, 13 Hook & Ladder
1962 - 1963
In an unheated loft, the Firehouse, Warhol worked on
his various large-format Disaster series as well as on his Silver pictures
(including Elvis). His models - photographs of a wide range of human
catastrophes (spectacular car crashes, suicides) - were printed beside
and beneath one another on the canvas. The sequence of pictures thereby
creates a film-like dynamic that nonetheless contrasts with the stasis
of the never-changing motif.
